15 houses back to back with private front door and greenhouse on the roof.
Instead of stacking apartments on top of each other, grouping them around staircases, each house is given a small footprint of the lot. The staircase with elevators is replaced with streets and alleys with private front doors and double doors for various use of the ground floor. The double doors allow the ground floor to be used for different activities as storing/fixing motorbikes, doing laundry, hobbies, TV etc. Each house has its own part of the pavement and the roofscape. Each house has a roof terrace with a greenhouse. The lot is situated in a backyard surrounded by 3-4 storey buildings. From the roof terrace there is a view over a river.
The project makes use of solid wood elements as construction, providing a rational, rigid structure. The benefits of using elements of solid wood are - apart form the environmental aspects - that the surfaces both in the exterior and the interior are nice and ready the moment the elements are put up. One major challange using solid wood construction is the sound transmission through floors. Designing vertical houses - not separating each others by floors - leads the way to a construction of the hole project entirely in solid wood.
The rationality is making this rather unusual type of housing affordable, compensating for the safe choice of a conventional apartment building.
